Business Case for the Wexford Waterford Rail Link

South East on Track is a group that campaigns for improved rail-based public transport across the South-East of Ireland.

The body has submitted a business case for the re-opening of the Wexford to Waterford City railway line to the National Development Plan. View the business case here:

They believe there is a strong case for the re-opening of the line, which saw its services suspended in 2010.

Currently, just 0.7% of people living and working in Wexford use public transport, while just 3% of Waterford City commuters use public transport.

Last November, the Government announced that it is committing €110 million to fund the North Quays Development in Waterford City, which will include a new state of the art train & bus station, and a new business district that will lead to 2,300 full time jobs by 2026 and the creation of a further 4,500 indirect jobs in the wider community.

In Wexford, the plan for the development of Trinity Wharf was approved by An Bord Pleanála last year. It promises to bring 2,000 jobs to Wexford Town in the long-term. It is to be built beside the site of the former Wexford South station on Trinity Street, and this station could be re-opened to give commuters the option to commute in an environmentally friendly manner.

This is an opportunity to put decent, reliable public transport at the heart of these planned developments.

Furthermore, the recent increase of freight through Rosslare port following Brexit can not be met entirely by road haulage, and we feel there is a market there for rail freight.
